Styles and conventions of music videos

Performance, Concert and  ‘as-live’
Artists make video's that can either look like a performance which means they are on stage or in a small room

Having a video that has an artist performing to its audience makes the people watching the video want to actually go and watch them perform live as the atmosphere would be so much better than the atmosphere at home.
My opinion on Birdhouse in Your Soul  is that in its strictest sense is a light that gives us comfort from the darkness.  The lyrics of the song don't mention light however the sentence "But I'm a little glowing friend" hints towards the thought of light because light indicates safety.

At the start of the video after their speech everyone is sitting down watching their video, this shows that that's what the audience at home may be doing, but by the end of the video you have people singing along, and standing up and dancing to them singing.  This makes whoever is watching it at home want to go and watch them or their favorite artist or band perform live so they too can have that experience.
Narrative
The video tells a story but it hasn't got direct link with the lyrics but it is still relates partly with the lyrics.

As the first verse is sung little lights appear around the man in the middle, this could make you think the song is about light or a light source of some kind.  They also sing "Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch" the mention of a light switch may make you think of a light in a room.
As the song goes on you have the filament of a light bulb which is obviously light related and as he walks through door ways there a loads of different lights which seem to be lighting his way, this makes it seems nicer rather than having him walk through the dark.  At 1:13 there is a room filled with light bulbs giving out a little bit of light.  It than goes back to him sing the first verse about being a friend as light bulbs on the left of the screen go down and the ones on the right are going up.
As the lyrics "There's a picture opposite me Of my primitive ancestry Which stood on rocky shores and kept the beaches shipwreck free Though I respect that a lot I'd be fired if that were my job After killing Jason off and countless screaming Argonauts Bluebird of friendliness Like guardian angels its always near" are sung there are people dancing but then there is the man sitting in a chair with a dial in his left hand which controls the lights surrounding him, as he sings about lighthouses saving sailors from crashing into the rocks, he turns the dial on and off making the lights do the same.  At the end of the song the light bulb goes off and everything is in darkness.
Interpretative
The video tells a story linked with the lyrics of the video

In this video Avril tries her hardest to steal someone else's boyfriend.  Throughout the video you see her trying different ways to get them to break up, in the end she obviously gets the boy.  I believe this video fits in with interpretive because the words Avril sings relate in the video.
We see the main people in this video walk into a room, Avril first plays the girlfriend who is happy with the relationship she and her boyfriend are in.   This shot lasts from 0:00-0:07, the shot then changes to the Avril who wants to be with the boy instead of the girl who is with him now.  This is an important part of the video because it shows the audience the couple before anything goes wrong, and it introduces the original couple.
Were then introduced to the Avril who wants to be with the boy, this is another important part for the audience so we know who she is in the video.  Having Avril fold her arms as the couple walk past shows that she isn't going to settle for not being notice and not getting what she wants.
Having Avril state infront of the other girl that she wants her boyfriend instantly lets viewers know what her plan is.  This is the first part in the song where the audience is told what she is going to achieve by the end of the video.
Throughout the song (the single) Avril does loads of different things to split up the couple, these things include  crashing into her go-kart making it spin out of control, making the ginger Avril leave the photo booth so black haired Avril can be in the photos instead, hitting her with the golf ball from a distance, and finally when black haired Avril gets to meet the boyfriend she makes the ginger haired Avril trip over her as she ducks to get out of the way making ginger haired Avril roll down a hill crashing into a portaloo.
At the end of the video we see Avril and her new boyfriend, this shows that she has accomplished what she was intending to do.
Impressionist
The video/images in the song portray the mood and pace of the song but it doesn't have to portray the lyrics.

This song is a fairly slow song, the lyrics and music make it and emotional song as well   The camera angles and locations they have add to the feelings portrayed in the video.
The song starts slowly zooming in to Leona Lewis creating the affect of uncertainty, it then starts to turn round her at the same pace as before, it then turns to face her face on as she starts to sing the first line of the song.  As she is staring in to the distance it makes it look like she is over looking everything and trying to think of one specific thing.  She starts to walk towards the camera but to the beat, this still makes the song quit slow and calming.
Having a close up of her face allows you to see the emotion she is showing,  this is makes the audience feel saddened as Leona looks fairly sad and has been hurt.  It then goes onto the chorus and she is standing in a deserted place alone, the lighting used here isn't very bright which still shows that she is still down hearted, her being alone in this shot shows that she feels alone in herself, with no one by her side.
Surrealism/ Abstract
A video that is totally unique and impossible, something that is unrelated to the the lyrics.
In Katy Perry's E.T video everything you see in it is impossible to see in real life, or to create in real life.  She may have decided to make a video so unique because the video's shes used to making aren't very abnormal, the fit into every day life happenings.
At the start of the video we see loads of scrap metal on the floor giving the illusion that it could just be set in a scrap yard to start off with, but you slowly start to wonder why it would be set in a scrap yard.  This last until 0:21 seconds, as it reaches 0:21 seconds it scans the floor showing you that the entire land is just covered in this metal.
At 0:22 seconds it moves onto a robot with a tear drop shape on its front, as the video progresses its starts to glow a brighter shade of orange, it then fades and goes into an extreme close up of it. It continues to get closer and closer until it changes into a circular spaceship with Kanye West in it.  It then focuses on him singing from 0:38 seconds to 1:03.
It then goes onto Katy Perry singing whilst this piece of fabric turns freely in space morphing into an alien which its mouth is moving to the lyrics as they are being sung.  The fabric continues to spin getting faster until the camera starts to shake making everything blurry, which after pictures that relate to the words being sung morphs into a pinkish fabric with Katy Perry singing.  This in would be impossible in real life as there is no air in space so it would be impossible to sing, and a planet wouldn't be made out of scrap metal.  Things cant morph into other things, for example when the fabric eventually appears with an alien in ti wouldn't be possible and the alien wouldn't be able to morph into a person.
After Katy Perry falls down to the planet where the robot lay she kisses it and it turns into what looks like a human, and it turns out that Katy Perry is the one who isn't human even though she looks it.  Again all of this is impossible because you cant have a human torso and a deer lower half.
Katy Perry might of made this video so unique because most artist tend to make videos about pointless/non meaningful things.  This is a very outstanding video to make which may give the message that love doesn't care for differences.
Animation, stop motion and digital
Animated music videos aren't filmed with real people they are made using the computer.  Stop motion is when you move

The Gorillaz only ever use animation to make their videos, this is what makes them stand out from everyone else and it gives a different dimension to their work. and it makes a change from singers/bands dancing or telling their story through the video.
At the start of their song they have an animated person and you instantly know that it is a Gorillaz song.  It then continues to show the other people in the band.  The entire of the video is animated, this changes what most people normally do for a video.  People that are fans of the Gorillaz may prefer the way they do their videos to other artist out there.
Parody
A parody is when someone makes a video but turns it funny/makes fun of it.  you don't have to be famous to make a parody, most people make them themselves at home and use their own resources.

This parody changes the lyrics to the original Friday song by Rebecca Black,  he keeps some of the words but changed most of them.
The first scene in the video starts the same way as Rebecca Blacks version, Josh may have put this in to make it seem like he may just change the word Friday to Tuesday.  He then sits up that same way Rebecca does and sings "It's 7am put my chapstick on..." instead of the original lyrics "7am waking up in the morning..." so already we know this version is going to be very different from the original.
0:30 seconds into the video Josh sings "gotta get down to my green van" in the original Rebecca sings "gotta get down to the bus stop..." Josh then goes onto taking the mick out of Rebecca by saying that he has 7seats in his van because he is a loaner rather than singing he has nowhere to sit like in the original.
Lastly he sings the chorus and instead of singing about partying like Rebecca he sings "gotta do a hop on Tuesday" and then sings a load of other random things he says he does on Tuesday.
Some parody's make the original video worse but others make the video funnier.  I chose this parody because when you hear the opening to the original Friday song people either love it or hate, I find the original too repetitive but i find this funny because of the things Josh sings about.
